Diaper Bags for Dads - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag

Todays dads are more hands-on than ever before and their involvement is being rewarded with parenting gear designed with men in mind. Many items that have typically been designed for the maternal side of the parental equation are now being introduced in masculine styles, colors, and fabrics, including diaper bags, baby carriers, and strollers.

For many parents a diaper bag is such an essential part of babys first years that it only makes sense to give daddy his due one simply cannot expect a man to tote around the little ones belongings in a feminine diaper bag with dignity and enthusiasm. In that scenario dad will spend more time trying not to be seen than attending to baby.

The selection of a diaper bag for dad is dependant on many factors, but for those new to the game we offer these simple pointers:

If in doubt, go for function over form, but get as close to your idea of the perfect marriage of both as possible.

Consider where and when youll be using you diaper bag most often trips to the park, for example, will require a more durable exterior, (water resistant is always a plus), than, say, daily trips to day care or indoor events.

A changing pad is almost a requirement if youll be out and about with baby. One diaper change without one in a public place and youll know what we mean.

The number of pockets and compartments youll want are dependant on your personal needs, (do you tend to take everything but the kitchen sink or travel light?), but we recommend at least one or two pockets on both the exterior and interior of the bag, and preferable at least one with a zipper or closure.

Determine the carrying style you are most comfortable with most men opt for a backpack or messenger style diaper bag, and some diaper bags convert from one to the other. Weve found that the backpack style bags and messenger bags worn across the body leave hands most free for dealing with baby. Adjustable straps allow you to get the most comfortable fit for your body.

Consider the extras. Again, depending on your personal style and needs you may wish to look for these items in a diaper bag: wipe case, wipeable and/or washable bag for soiled items, insulated bottle holder(s), external pockets for baby bottles, sippy cups, or your own water bottle, carbiner clip for keys.

Designer diaper bags for men run the gamut from basic black messenger style diaper bags for under $55 to sports-themed diaper bags such as celebrity favorite Timi & Leslies Magic diaper bag made from authentic basketball leather to Diaper Dudes rock and roll guitar diaper bag and everything in between. With the growing array of choices on the market, isnt it time the papa in your life got a brand new bag of his own?

Baby Diaper Dilemmas - Cloth Or Disposable?

Hmmmm, which one should you choose, cloth diapers or disposable diapers? Well, it really depends on your attitudes and lifestyle. If you are a stay-at-home, earth mother, with a deep interest in environmental issues, it's probably likely that cloth diapers are your (and your baby's) thing. However, if you are a busy go-getting urban mom, disposables are probably an integral and necessary part of your lifestyle.

But are these (stereotypical) characterizations the most accurate way to assess the advantages of cloth vs. disposable? Remember that a baby may need to be changed up to 10 times a day, so you need to get the choice right. Let's look a little more closely at the two types.

Cloth diapers Cloth diapers have been around for centuries. Modern cloth diapers are usually made of cotton. Their advantages are:

1. They are made of natural materials, so are less likely to cause skin problems such as rashes and allergic reactions. 2. They are very comfortable and can be molded to fit the baby. 3. They are cheap - buy 'em once and re-use countless times. 4. They are better for potty training older babies, since the baby feels the wetness of a soiled nappy. 5. They can be re-cycled as cleaning rags!

However, they also come with a number of disadvantages:

1. They are more difficult to fit - they often require folding, separate safety pins and separate plastic covers (although modern versions have resolved these issues). 2. They have to be cleaned and washed separately to other clothes, with all the time and cost involved. 3. Not convenient to use on trips out, out, since soiled nappies need to be stored away and carried around.

Disposable Diapers Disposables have been around since the 1950s. They evolved quickly during the 60s and became extremely popular in the developed world during the 70s when they became affordable for the masses. This was followed by many technological advances in the 80s and 90s as manufacturers continually sought to make them easier to use and more effective. The advantages of disposables are relatively obvious;

1. Ease of use - take one off, clean up baby and put the new one on. 2. Ease of disposal - just wrap it up and put it in the trash. 3. Great for using when away from home - just find the nearest trash can and go on you way with a happy and fresh-smelling baby.

However, they also have disadvantages: 1. The artificial materials used leaves baby more at risk to allergic reactions and rashes. 2. They are much more expensive than cloth diapers. 3. They are not as helpful for potty training older babies, since the baby cannot feel any wetness. 4. They are (very) environmentally unfriendly.

The environment question The pro-cloth group point to the much cheaper cost; it is estimated that in two and a half years, a child will probably use 6,000 disposable nappies, compared to about 24-50 cloth ones. However, the pro-disposable group point out that this massive cost-saving is offset by the various costs incurred in washing cloth nappies, so no-one really knows if they are cheaper in the long-run.

However, the big debate is the environmental one - it's still not known how long it takes for a disposable nappy to breakdown and it's very possible that every one ever made is still around and may last for hundreds of years. No doubt this is extremely harmful for the environment as is the number of raw materials, energy resources and chemicals used to make them in the first place.

Again, the pro-disposable group point to the high level of energy resource used to continually prepare cloth diapers for re-use. However, it is difficult to argue against the environmental effects of 6000 nappies per baby, filling landfill sites around the world. In fact, many national governments and local government organizations are now trying to develop strategies for managing what is fast becoming a major world-wide waste-disposal problem. Disposable diaper manufacturers themselves are also trying to develop more bio-degradable products, but the effectiveness of these has yet to be proved.

The debate will rage on. Disposables rule the roost because of their convenience, but it's difficult not to conclude that - as always - your mother knows best, when she says that traditional cloth diapers are better. But remember, it doesn't have to be one or the other - there can be a place for both cloth and disposable diapers in busy parents' lifestyles.

Protect Your Baby From Diaper Rash

Diapers let parents take their babies out without having to worry about them dirtying their clothes. They are comfortable for both the parents and the tots. But some times, this can backfire. Baby's soft bottom is then converted into irritating swamp. Babies cry and their bottoms itch. But the good news is that most of the times, the rash clears up within a day. But in certain cases, it can linger on for a few days. This can keep your child irritated for days on end. But you can follow some simple home remedies and keep away the rash,

Here are some simple tips that can avoid or treat the diaper rash:

* Use gel disposable diapers: If you choose the disposable diapers, choose the diapers with the latest absorbent gelling material. These diapers remove the dampness away from the skin than the other types of diapers. They also keep the skin's pH level more acidic, thus decreasing the chances of suffering from diaper rashes. All the leading brands of diapers have this gelling material.

* Wash the cloth diapers with vinegar: If you choose to go in for reusable cloth diapers, rinse them in vinegar at the time of wash to change the pH and reduce the chances of diaper rash. Add a quarter cup of plain white kitchen vinegar to each load of diapers during the final rinse cycle of the wash. Avoid using the fabric softeners during the washing of the diapers because they put a coating on the diapers that prevents them from absorbing as well,

* Apply warm cornstarch: Instead of using the modern talcum powders available for treatment of diaper rash, use cornstarch. Take cornstarch and spread it out on the baking pan and warm it in the oven at the temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit for about ten minutes till it is completely dry. Test the temperature first and then apply it gently to the baby's bottom. Cornstarch is as smooth as the commercially available talcum powder but is cheaper and more effective.

* Blow dry the bottom: Keep the infected area dry and clean to speed up the healing. Do not use a towel to clean the area as it can be very abrasive. Instead use a hair dryer set on low or cool for three minutes to dry the infected area.

* Avoid using diapers: The best solution is to avoid using diapers so that the skin can air itself as much as possible to promote healing. But if it is not possible, keep the diaper under the baby when it is lying on its stomach. This can be done when it is sleeping or any other times when it is still.

* Choose paper instead of plastic: If the baby has excess leakage, which can lead to diaper rash, keep a paper towel between its skin and diaper. The paper towel helps in stopping the leakage without blocking air circulation. The drawback of plastic is that it seals the moisture thus increasing infection.

* Breastfeed the baby: Babies who have been breastfed since birth show a lower incidence and severity of diaper rash than those who have been fed baby formula. The effects of dietary influence are seen even after the babies are weaned.

* Avoid soap and baby wipes: Stop using soap and baby wipes if your child has the rash. Commercially available wipes contain alcohol that can aggravate the rash and cause more pain. Some of them can also cause the rash due to the presence of certain chemicals. Soap is very harsh on the sensitive skin and the baby should be washed without soap if it is suffering from diaper rash.

Product Review: The Do It Yourself Cloth Diapering Handbook

Pregnant and thinking of using cloth diapers? This handbook will give you all the information you will ever need!

The best part of the Diapering Handbook (other than it's extreme detail) is it's spiral binding. Those with children know how difficult it can be to read anything while tending to a child. Should you need a quick tip (which as some point, you probably will), the book can be handled easily with one hand.

Included with the handbook is also a Cloth Diaper Business Directory, which lists tons of businesses that sell cloth diapers and accessories. It is not just listings though - the directory includes businesses in US, Canada, and Australia complete with what type of products they offer, contact information, plus shopping related notes (shipping info, discounts, payment plans, etc). There's even room for notes to let you comparison shop and a page for buying/selling record keeping.

My impression of this book is a resounding "WOW!". Even if you are just thinking about using cloth diapers, this handbook gives you all the pros and cons to both disposables and cloth. You are taken through every tiny step from choosing the type of diapers, what supplies to use, how to get started, and of course - how to use cloth diapers.

In the first chapter, it explains the health hazards (both to child and environment) of disposable diapers, backed by several published research sources. It assures you that cloth diapers are not as difficult or inconvenient as it may first seem.

In the next several chapters, the handbook explains the many types of cloth diapers with pictures as examples, as well as details about diaper covers and supplies. With this handbook, you'll be able to make better choices on what type of cloth to buy, and what their purposes are. Did you know there are even cloth diapers made for night and swimming? The handbook explains those types of cloth diapers too! Recipes are also included for making your own natural baby wipe solution.

After you learn about the supplies needed, you'll be ready to get started. There's an entire chapter on buying and selling new or used diapers. You'll learn where to buy them, and what to look for.

Next of course comes using the cloth diapers. The handbook teaches how to fasten diapers, how to stuff pocket diapers, changing a dirty diapers, what to do about diaper rash and it's causes, diapering on the go, and the many ways to fold cloth diapers. Folding techniques are broken down by type of cloth diaper (flatfold or prefold), as well as a chapter on night time diapering. There's even a chapter on what to do in an emergency if you run out of clean diapers!

There's still more to this handbook though. Extra chapters include storing dirty diapers and laundering tips, each with wonderful detail.

Every situation you can possibly think of is included "The Do It Yourself Cloth Diapering Handbook", making it a must have for any mother-to-be, or anyone looking for information on cloth diapering.

Motherhood Naturally also offers a large selection of unique natural parenting products in addition. Catalog information can be found at their website.

The Benefits of Discount Adult Diapers

Millions of Americans suffer from varying degrees of incontinence. Because of this, the market for adult diapers has become a big business. Anyone who has experienced incontinence for prolonged period of time can tell you that buying disposable adult diapers can become a very significant investment.

Because disposable diapers can become very expensive, people have begun to research ways to buy discount adult diapers. With a little investment in time and persistence in your research, you should be able to find diapers below retail cost. A good way to begin your search is by using an Internet search engine such as Google.

Perhaps one of the best ways to get discount adult diapers is buying them in bulk. For people who suffer from moderate to severe incontinence, this is likely the most cost effective option. You know you will need the diapers and if you choose to go the disposable-diaper route, having plenty on hand is always a good idea. Some manufacturers and resellers offer volume discounts. You can find many stores that offer $5, $10 and even $15 off when you buy a case of discount adult diapers.

Large discount stores such as Sam's Clubs and Costco are also good places to locate deals for discount adult diapers. Since you are buying large quantities with each purchase, the stores are able to offer discounts. You can save upwards of 20% in some cases, which can add up to huge long-term savings. Having a stockpile of adult diapers is ideal for many who do not want to worry about running out or spending more than they have to.

Although incontinence is not necessarily a part of growing older, many older people suffer from the disorder. Because many of these older people live on stringent budgets, finding ways to cut costs is essential. Cloth diapers involve a one-time investment but can be less accessible and convenient than disposable diapers. There are many options out there to help you find discount adult diapers. You just need to spend a little time researching what options are available and shop around for the best prices.

Adult Diapers Info provides comprehensive information about adult incontinence diapers, adult cloth diapers, adult disposable diapers, and adult diaper rash, as well as where to buy adult diapers and discount adult diapers. Adult Diapers Info is affiliated with Original Content.

Effective Strategies for Dealing with Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is a really annoying baby problem. It can get out of control easily, and can make your baby miserable. Luckily, it can be controlled with a little effort on your part. Following are some remedies that worked well with my children.

Some babies are just more prone to diaper rash than others, and if yours is prone, you'll really have to keep on top of the problem. The most important thing you can do is change your baby's diaper regularly. Diaper rash is caused by the skin being constantly exposed to wetness, so changing frequently can prevent the problem. Most of the diaper rash ointments on the market are designed simply to protect your baby's skin from wetness, so they are great at preventing diaper rash. If your baby is diaper rash prone, you might want to use an ointment at every changing as a preventative measure.

But, what if your baby already has a raging case of diaper rash? As I said, most of the products labeled as diaper rash ointments are best at preventing diaper rash, not healing it. There are a few concoctions that can help cure a bad case of diaper rash.

The first is Maalox - yes Maalox. Put some liquid Maalox on a cotton ball and apply to baby's sore bottom. Let it dry a bit before diapering. For obvious reasons, don't buy the mint flavor, and don't use this bottle of Maalox for anything but treating diaper rash.

A second helpful treatment for diaper rash is an oatmeal bath. There are some good oatmeal bath products on the market, even some designed especially for baby. These work wonders on diaper rash. Usually one or two baths is all it takes.

Finally, I had great luck when I mixed diaper rash ointment with a little bit of hydrocortisone cream. About 3 parts diaper rash ointment to one part hydrocortisone. One caution here- check with your doctor before you try this one, since hydrocortisone cream is normally not recommended for use on children under the age of two years.

If these remedies don't work, check with your pediatrician. There may be some prescription products for extreme cases. But, the most important measure to take for diaper rash seems to be persistence. Keeping on top of the problem is your best bet for keeping the rash at bay.
